The fracking debate in Taranaki has taken a new twist. The Taranaki Regional Council, the authority that grants resource consents to onshore drilling and fracking, is in the process of ignoring of three people who have been raising issues with the council in relation to environmental monitoring (or lack thereof).

The Court of Appeal has denied a bail application by Taame Iti and Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara this morning. The appeal for Taame, Rangi, Emily and Urs was heard in the Court of Appeal. The four are appealing against sentence and conviction. Taame and Rangi received a 2.5 year jail sentence that they are currently serving at Waikeria and Spring Hill prison.
Yesterday a state of emergency was extended for yet another month following the deaths of four people during protests against the multi-billion dollar Conga gold project in Cajamarca, located in northern Peru.
